Selected Story 1:Dog suicide middle of the road

By: Phil in Thailand

I came upon this thread after observing dogs in Thailand first hand. Firstly dogs in Thailand behave very differently then in the US or Europe. They rarely bark. I've seen Thai men chase dogs out of their yards tossing objects at them with obvious intent to harm. Its a dog world here for dogs. It is obvious when I approach a dog here it is clearly nervous and there is no question that I am boss. The observation that led me to this thread was that some dogs lay down directly in the street. I saw one dog inching his way closer and closer to busy traffic. Today I saw perhaps for the last time one dog that was laying down right in the middle of the road. He didn't even look up when cars passed closely by. It was almost as if it wxnted to be put out of his misery. This particular dog appeared to be in ill health and was nothing but skin and bone.

It was a sad sight to witness.

Selected Story 2:Dog suicide hot spot 'nonsense'

By Gillian Harris, Scotland Correspondent

ANIMAL workers have rejected suggestions of a spate of dog “suicides” at a 40ft bridge.

Five dogs have jumped to their deaths in the past six months at the bridge at Overtoun House, Dumbarton, according to locals. The most recent was last weekend when an owner was unable to stop her dog leaping over.

Joyce Stewart, an animal behaviourist, said the deaths were abnormal as dogs were usually able to gauge the heights and depths they could jump. “If they know they are going to die they might go into hiding but I have never heard of them taking their own lives,” she said.

A spokesman for the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said: “Animals do not commit suicide. (This) shows the need for dog owners to keep their dogs under control. There is perhaps something over the bridge attracting the dogs’ attention.”

The bridge, over a tributary of the Clyde, lies within the grounds of Overtoun House, an A-listed baronial building currently run as a Christian centre. It was the scene of a family tragedy in 1994 when Kevin Moy threw his two-week-old son to his death believing him to be the Antichrist.

Selected Story 3:Cat die for his friend
By:glo

I definitely believe that animals can commit suicide. I have had 2 cats do it and I have been wondering if I were right or wrong in believing this so that's why I'm here on this website.

Over 4 yrs. ago we were ready to move from our house and my cat Toby didn't wnt to be put in his cat carrier so he escaped by running between my legs as I was opening a door to go outside and none of us could catch him so we let him go, knowing I would be back in 2 days to finish up after the move, so I left food and water out on the back patio so he would have something to eat.

When I came back in 2 days I found out from my daughter that he was dead on the side of the road and they had picked him up and taken him to a location outside of town. I made my daughter show me where he was and so I packed him up and took him to the new house and buried him out on a hill in beautiful surroundings.

Later, I saw his ghost in my house. He was just sitting there; no movement. Like he was reassuring me that he was with me always. Really strange I thought, but I was comforted by seeing him all the same.

When I turned away and then looked back, he was gone. I felt that he was just being his silly self that night that we moved and that he thought that we'd be back and so he was just playing around like he always did. Then when we didn't come back, I think he thought that we had abandoned him and it crushed him to be left alone so he did what he had to do if he thought we were never coming back; let himself get hit by a car.

He was an indoor-outdoor cat and he knew his way around very well outside and avoided cars driving by so I knew he was able to take care of himself and he didn't ever feel abandoned until we left so I believe he did commit suicide.

In Jan.2010 another loved cat got sick & we found out he had cancer. He was operated on but the vet said it would probably grow back. I decided to care for him hoping he'd survive.

He recuperated from the surgery but never was able to eat properly again (a tumor under his tongue) and then he got plugged up and couldn't have a bowel movement. He was in & out of the vet's office for 5 long weeks and finally had to make the decision to have him euthanized. It was extremely sad and painful for me. I'm still not over it.

He was not the 2nd cat to commit suicide. His buddy, SilentBob died yesterday from a car hitting him. Bob was pals with the sick cat and I'm sure he noticed when he was gone. Strangely enough, in the last week or so, I had noticed a black spot in the tooth area that had never been there before.

He was also showing no appetite for a day or two. (The cat that had died, T-Bone, had had a black spot in the same area) . I was going to take him to the vet but hadn't done so just yet.

Another sign that he wasn't being our AlphaMale cat around the house was that our youngest cat who is just under a year old, was scaring Bob off when she encountered him.
This NEVER happened ever. Bob was the "big man" in our household and the other cats bent down to him and never bothered him.

I figure that Bob had become ill and he didn't wnt to live that way especially after seeing his buddy T-Bone suffer the way that he did, so I think he went out and done himself in the quickest way to end his suffering rather than go the route that T-Bone went. Just my opinion. Bob was also very conscious of the cars around.

There weren't many that went by but whenever they did he'd run into the yard every time so I know it was no accident. Only his head was traumatized. The rest of him looked normal.

Impact of emotion happiness and Sadness To Animal

Just like everyone of us,animals also experience a profound feeling of sadness,it been proven by scientist who studying the behavior of wild and domestic animals that the degree of impact of emotion(happiness and sadness)are not much different to human. It proven (if you have a dog ,go look at your dogs tail when they happy..)

Animals are capable of pure sorrow when they lose someone close to them,of course I am not saying all animal has emotion and felling, the animals who give birth to live young, and most of these animal will possess specialized teeth, mammals placentals who use a placenta during gestation. These mammalian brain regulates endothermic and circulatory systems, including a beating heart, they are emotional animal!!!

There are about 5000 species of living mammals. You know?these amazing animals not only live on land, we can found them at sea, in the air, or even under the ground..Whales & Dolphins ,they are mammals, dolphins are highly social animals with large brains, they even show empathy towards one another, like some sort of love relational ship..

Most typical example of these animal are dog, cat, cow,So,if they having felling, emotion, does mammals consciously commit suicide under certain circumstances ?Do they know ,hate, angry when someone try to kill them?

Do any animals other than humans commit suicide?
Some people argue that animal has no intelligent ,they are lower grade that we can kill ,eat, abandoned, whatsoever. It has commonly been assumed that "we"are the only creatures that understand what is "happiness","sadness","playfulness","depressed",..etc.They don't even have a well-developed sense of self before we could even consider the idea that they might decide to voluntarily end their lives.

Quotes from amswer.com
via:http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Do_any_animals_other_than_humans_commit_suicide:

~ In order for an act to be classed as "suicide," the agent must know that what it is about to do will end its life. In order to have this awareness, the agent must also understand that it could exist in one of two possible states: alive or dead. These sorts of thoughts are far too abstract for any known animal to think, even the more intelligent non-humans like Chimpanzees, Bonobos, and Dolphins ~

Well, clearly there is nothing to do with "self awareness". Is it a case for an animal to commit suicide if they know that they will die at the end of reproduction. We see it with octopuses, salmon, Japanese foliage spider and even the male shrew. All of which willingly sacrifice themselves for the lives of their offspring, an i believe that they are aware of their impending fate as they are more in touch with their body systems than we are. So does the drive to reproduce overriding the will to live count as suicide.

I have seem people who abuse their pets, hunting and killing animal just for "fun",these people might think that they are just "animal"with no brain, low level creatures, life that doesn't have any value..Realize that animals have feelings too so ,try to act kindly towards all creatures now - even little ants and bugs (there are not your prisoner!!!!!!!).

Another reason why they participate in such risky sports is that they feel they have conquered the world after undergoing numerous challenges. The feeling cannot be provided by the ordinary activities, which are less attractive.

Therefore, a substantial number of people assemble to share the distinctive experience of dangerous sports and pursue excitement. The dangerous sports such as bungee jumping defeat the people's panics so that people will become more optimistic.

Can Hearing Voices In Your Head Be A Good Thing?

Are you one of the people who hear voices in your head?

Where does the voice come from? The voice comes from deep in our throat,is that real or it just a illusion?

The truth is,research has shown that there are many people who hear voices.

Can Hearing Voices In Your Head Be A Good Thing?

Below is the study and research conducted by University of Manchester.

Psychologists have launched a study to find out why some people who hear voices in their head consider it a positive experience while others find it distressing.

The University of Manchester investigation – announced on World Hearing Voices Day (Thursday, 14th September) – comes after Dutch researchers found that many healthy members of the population there regularly hear voices.

Although hearing voices has traditionally been viewed as 'abnormal' and a symptom of mental illness, the Dutch findings suggest it is more widespread than previously thought, estimating that about 4% of the population could be affected.

Researcher Aylish Campbell said: "We know that many members of the general population hear voices but have never felt the need to access mental health services; some experts even claim that more people hear voices and don't seek psychiatric help than those who do.

"In fact, many of those affected describe their voices as being a positive influence in their lives, comforting or inspiring them as they go about their daily business. We're now keen to investigate why some people respond in this way while others are distressed and seek outside help."

Although the voices heard by psychiatric patients and members of the general population seem to be of the same volume and frequency, the former group tend to interpret the voices as more distressing and negative.

The team believes that external factors such as a person's life experiences and beliefs may be the key to these differences: for example, the presence of childhood trauma or negative beliefs about themselves could have an affect.

"If a person is struggling to overcome a trauma or views themselves as worthless or vulnerable, or other people as aggressive, they may be more likely to interpret their voices as harmful, hostile or powerful," said Aylish.

"Conversely, a person who has had more positive life experiences and formed more healthy beliefs about themselves and other people might develop a more positive view of their voices.

"People being treated for hearing voices are usually given medication in an attempt to eliminate the problem. By investigating the factors influencing how voices are experienced we hope to contribute to the development of psychological therapies to help people better understand and cope with their voices."

The Impacrt and Effects of Depression To Human

We talked about the Impact of emotion happiness and Sadness to Animal and how depression and sadness commit suicide action to animal. Now what are the impact of depression on a human mind?

Depression can affect anyone.I've been suffering from depression since I was a kid. That may sound unbelievable to some of you that depression can possibly experienced that early, or it may sound incredulous if you don't even believe that depression is something that is very difficult to deal with. .Sure, some believe it's not a real medical condition, but that it is people being lazy and needing to "pull themselves up by their boot straps." This is definitely not how it works. mental illnesses and depression are Medical Conditions .Depression is a serious condition that affects millions of people.

Some people don't need to take medication for their depression. They use other methods to beat it, and that usually works for mild depression or dysthymic disorder (a low-grade chronic depression). For Major Clinical Depression such as I have, medication has been a god-send for me. I don't know how I'd cope without the alteration these drugs cause in my brain chemicals. For some reasons, these chemicals (dopamine, norepinephrine, and seratonin) don't work well enough on their own. So for me, medication, cognitive-behavioral therapy, exercise, and general daily activity help a lot in getting better from this disorder.

I also have panic disorder with agoraphobia. Medication has helped with this also. For those of you who are not familiar with this condition, the panic part of is severe anxiety that sometimes causes panic attacks. These attacks include but are not limited to the following: shortness of breath, dizziness, fear of dying, tightness in the chest, and sweating. There is also a general sense of anxiety that is persistent most of the time. The agoraphobia part is a fear of leaving the house or of being in places where one feels he or she cannot easily escape such as a crowded store or traffic.

I do a lot to try to escape the pitfalls of depression, including the treatments I mentioned earlier in this blog. Blogging itself also helps.

I hope that this blog will be of benefit to someone. This isn't the most fun thing to talk about, but I'm not ashamed of my disability. Frustrated, yes, but not ashamed. People who suffer from depression don't ask for it, and more people should seek help when they need it. It is not a form of weakness or a lack of self-motivation. It's a real medical condition with so many treatment options. If you're depressed, please get help. You're not alone.

In Sync with Adolescence

Taken From:In Sync with Adolescence
Author:Anna-Karin Andershed

At the start of every school day, it’s not an unfamiliar sight to see younger children bounding toward school, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, ready to seize the day. In contrast, adolescents sometimes seem to sleepwalk toward their middle and high schools, often bleary-eyed, cantankerous, and less than enthusiastic to get down to work. Why the difference?

Recent developmental research has demonstrated a relationship between sleep/wake patterns and different kinds of problem behaviors, including social adjustment problems, family coercion, and disaffection from school. Adolescents who prefer staying up later in the evening and arising late in the morning (i.e., eveningness) have often been considered at greater risk of suffering from such problem behaviors as delinquency and negative relationships with parents and teachers. Those who tend to go to bed and arise earlier (i.e., morningness) have long been associated with more positive outcomes.

In the majority of previous research, however, these concepts have never been adequately tested.

In Sync with Adolescence: The Role of Morningness-Eveningness in Development examines the possible effects of adolescent preferences on problem behavior in different contexts. This volume presents a new way of looking at morningness-eveningness in relation to adolescent development in general and on problem behavior in particular. The study has produced results, the implications of which necessitate a reinterpretation of the current thinking about morningness-eveningness and adolescent adjustment.

This volume should be of particular interest to developmental psychologists and researchers who are interested in examining the role of biological factors in psychological processes as well as to sleep researchers who are interested in both the clinical and behavioral aspects. In addition, it is a valuable resource for clinical child and school psychologists, medical staff, teachers, and anyone who works with adolescents.
